Judge from lesbian adoption controversy resigns

Circuit Court Judge Susan McDunn, whose handling of two lesbian adoption cases in the late '90s sparked public outcry, has resigned from her position, according to the Office of the Chief Judge Hon. Timothy Evans.

McDunn resigned Nov. 9 in a letter to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Thomas Kilbride.

McDunn's resignation comes after reports that had she appeared in federal court claiming that secret lawsuits had been filed in her name against powerful people in an attempt to destroy her.

In response to a Sun-Times report about McDunn's court appearances, the Chief Judge's office release a statement noting that McDunn had been suspended months prior.

In 1998 and 1999 McDunn was accused of mishandling two lesbian adoption cases, delaying a ruling on one and seeking out the opinions of the Family Research Council, an anti-gay organization, in the other.

Bar associations recommended that she not be retained in 2004, but voters allowed her to stay that year and in 2010.
