Transgender women and girls would be banned from competing in girls' sports offered by Iowa's schools, colleges and universities under a bill the Iowa House recently passed, The Des Moines Register reported.
The House voted 55-39 to pass the bill, with all but one RepublicanRep. Michael Bergan, R-Dorchestervoting in favor and every Democrat opposed.
The bill's Republican supporters say it's aimed at "protecting girls' sports" from what they say are unfair athletic advantages for transgender girls. Opponents of the legislation say it's hurtful because it refuses to accept transgender youth for who they are.
If the Iowa legislation becomes law, it's possible schools could lose federal education funding and that the state could see legal costs related to lawsuits, a nonpartisan state agency estimated. |
