The inaugural Illinois High School Association girls wrestling state series kicked off across the state Feb. 11, per the Rockford Register Star.
Illinois became the 28th state to sanction girls wrestling as a sport, and it came on the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, Team USA Wrestling noted. There are now 32 states that have girls wrestling as a sanctioned high school sport.
Girls from 201 schools competed in four different sectionals: Naperville, Evanston, Peoria and Tinley Park. The wrestlers looked to finish in the top four in their weight classes to advance to the first girls state tourney.
The girls individual state finals will be held Feb. 25-26 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington. The weight classes will be: 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190 and 235 pounds. See TrackWrestling.com for the latest results.
