NEW YORK, NY, August 23, 2012 — In The Life Media continues its coverage of the real-life impact of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) with "Edie Takes on DOMA." The web-exclusive short features 83-year-old Edie Windsor, a lesbian widow whose case challenging DOMA could determine the future of the law.
Edie and her late wife, Thea, were life-long partners. Engaged for 40 years, they were married — finally — in 2008. A year later, Thea died of progressive multiple sclerosis and, because DOMA bars the Federal Government from recognizing their marriage, Edie was hit with $360K in estate taxes.
"In the midst of my grief at the loss of the love of my life, I had to spend countless hours defending our relationship," said Edie. "The Federal Government treated us like strangers. It was very painful."
Edie sued the government and in June of 2012, a Federal District Court in New York ruled in her favor, finding that DOMA unconstitutionally discriminates against same-sex married couples. Now, she's petitioning the Supreme Court to hear her case.
