Howard Brown Health Center ( HBHC ) announced that its case management clients will be receiving pro bono legal counsel from a group of lawyers as part of a project being led by Jeremy Gottschalk of Bell, Boyd & Lloyd LLC.
Howard Brown's case management program is comprehensive, offering everything from psychosocial assessments to housing location services to substance abuse treatment. More than 92 percent of the program's clients are living at or below the poverty level.
'This program is so important to our case management clients,' Michael Cook, HBHC president and CEO, said in a statement. 'The former practicing attorney added that ' [ s ] ometimes just getting through the day is difficult enough for someone impacted with HIV, and tackling these extremely complex issues can be overwhelming. Together with Jeremy we hope to ease some of their burden.'
Gottschalk is also helming a series of legal seminars targeted to the LGBT community. Along with partners Howard Brown, Center on Halsted, the Chicago Public Library and the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Chicago, attorneys will be presenting seminars on topics such as employment discrimination, residential real estate and and estate planning. Seminars begin on June 21, and will be held either at Howard Brown, 4025 N. Sheridan, or the Chicago Public Library Merlo Branch, 644 W. Belmont. All of them will begin at 6:30 p.m.
