The Crossroads Fund Youth Fund for Social Change gave Youth Pride Center ( YPC ) a grant to create 10 much-needed gay-straight alliances ( GSAs ) at South Side public schools.
YPC currently works with LGBT youth that represent roughly 22 South Side schools, but there is a lack of GSAs in that area.
Over 3,000 schools across the U.S. have GSAs registered with the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network ( GLSEN ) .
YPC serves area youth ages 13-21, and membership is open to all youth.
Using the grant, YPC will help train youth from 10 different schools with the skills needed to create and maintain a GSA. When ready, the GSAs will be moved from YPC to each school with the help of school officials. Each GSA will be supported by YPC for one year..
