During a four-hour round of golf, 18 women in the United States die from breast cancer. That statistic is reason enough to "Take a Swing at Breast Cancer," a golf tournament created by A Sister's Hope to raise funding for researcher Dr. Seema Khan, Co-Leader Breast Cancer Program, Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chicago.
Eighteen holes for 18 women: it seems a logical match.
The charity tournament takes place Monday, Sept. 12, at Highland Park Country Club and golfers tee off with a 1 pm shotgun start. Instead of a registration fee, golfers are asked to raise $18 per hole in honor of the 18 women who will be lost that afternoon.
Dr. Khan, who has received $17,000 from two other A Sister's Hope events in the past 10 months, will attend the post-golf dinner to personally address and thank the participants.
A Sister's Hope, founded in 2006 by Chicagoan Cathy Seabaugh, has as its mission to raise significant funding for breast cancer research and to help individuals realize their own power to make the world what we dream it can be. Over the past four years, A Sister's Hope event participants have generated $57,153 for U.S. researchers. Seabaugh took the concept of A Sister's Hope to The Netherlands where participants have raised more than $3.5 million since 2007 for researchers in Holland.
