CHICAGO (Jan. 3, 2012) — Iconic activist and lecturer Gloria Steinem will be the featured speaker for Columbia College Chicago's Conversations in the Arts, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7. This season, the featured speakers are innovators who have shaped trends and topics in disciplines taught through Columbia College's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The free public lecture will be in the Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash Ave. Theater seating is limited so advanced registration is highly recommended. Reservations open Jan. 4 at www.colum.edu/conversations.
As an activist, Steinem is a pioneer and a specialist on inequality issues and gender roles. She helped to found and co-found the Women's Action Alliance, the National Women's Political Caucus, the Women's Media Center, Voters for Choice, Choice USA, the Ms. Foundation for Women and "Take Our Daughters to Work Day."
Steinem is an accomplished writer and editor, founding New York Magazine in 1968 and co-founding Ms. Magazine in 1972, where she remained an editor for 15 years. She was also an editor of Houghton Mifflin's "The Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's History." Her work has been featured in Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, women's magazines, anthologies, textbooks and international publications. Her books include "Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem," "Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions," "Moving Beyond Words," and "Marilyn: Norma Jean."
Biography magazine listed her as one of the 25 most influential women in America and she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993. Currently living in New York City, Steinem is at work on "Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered," a book about her thirty plus years on the road as a feminist organizer.
