Danny Sotomayor, 1958-1992________
Gerber/Hart Library, 1127 W. Granville, will hold a closing reception for 'Unrelentingly Drawn: The Editorial Cartoons of Danny Sotomayor' on Thurs., Aug. 30, at 6:30 p.m. The retrospective exhibition features the editorial cartoons of the late Daniel Sotomayor, who died of AIDS in 1992.
Sotomayor's cartoons addressed AIDS, religion, politics, among other issues. Sotomayor was a member of ACT UP/Chicago and was the subject of the 1990 documentary, Short Fuse: The Story of an AIDS Activist.
The closing reception, entitled 'Act Up, Fight Back,' is taking place on what would have been Sotomayor's 49th birthday. David Munar, vice president of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, will be the featured speaker.
In addition, the library will hold its annual benefit, 'Piecing History Together,' on Sat., Sept. 29, at the Swedish American Museum Center, 5211 N. Clark, at 7 p.m. Cleve Jones, founder of the The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, will be the featured speaker.
