A diversity health fair targeting the gay and lesbian community was held Dec. 10 in Oak Park.
The free event, which was a collaborative effort between the Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association ( OPALGA ) , the Oak Park Health Department and the PCC Wellness Center of Oak Park, offered various health screenings, including blood pressure checks and cholesterol tests, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Susan Abbott, the youth program director for OPALGA, told the newspaper that a grant from the Illinois Department of Health's Center for Minority Health Services funded the event. She received the grant after conducting a health survey of the group's members—a survey that revealed that stress management and exercise were the top concerns.
During a discussion, audience members expressed concern about locating gay-friendly physicians.
