Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens died at age 99 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 16.
According to Advocate.com, Stevens left a legacy of pro-LGBTQ decisions. While on the court1975 to 2010he dissented from a ruling that upheld anti-sodomy laws ( such as the pivotal Bowers v. Hardwick case in 1986 ) and joined the majority in the ruling that finally struck them down nationwide.
In addition, Stevens supported abortion rights, campaign-finance reform and gun restrictions, and opposed the death penalty.
Gerald Ford, a Republican president, nominated Stevens to the court; another GOP leader, Richard Nixon, named Stevens to a lower federal court. And presidents often felt Stevens' power: NPR noted that he wrote the court's five-to-three decision rejecting president George W. Bush's assertion of unilateral executive power in setting up war crimes tribunals at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and he authored the court's unanimous decision in Clinton v. Jonesthe decision refusing to postpone Paula Jones' sexual-harassment lawsuit against President Bill Clinton. |
