Colorado is experiencing history as two gay candidates are battling for a spot in the state Senate, according to U.S. News & World Report.
In the state's 31st districtwhich includes parts of Denveropenly gay Republican Michael Carr is opposing incumbent Democrat Pat Steadman.
Carr was put on the ticket after the original candidate dropped out, and said the party approached him to run. The Colorado GOP said it would run "whoever was qualified."
Carr lived in Chicago, where he was president of the Illinois chapter of Log Cabin Republicans, before moving to Colorado. He and partner Fred Bachhuber were united Jan. 21 at Navy Pier.
The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which works to elect LGBT lawmakers, has already endorsed Steadman, who has also worked as a lobbyist. Carr is applying to earn the group's co-endorsement.
