Out and proud singer Melissa Etheridge recently returned to The Chicago Theatre after she had played in the venue a few years ago. There was a strong LGBT crowd holding hands and swaying to the raspy soulful voice of hers from the first note.
Etheridge started the night with "Shout Now" and was expressive, emotional and including a harmonica solo. She then spoke of how happy she was to be back in the space with the ghosts that haunt the walls. The history of her and The Chicago Theatre was undeniable, and she accompanied said history with a stripped-down rock n' roll set complete with no background curtains, exposing the blank walls behind.
Fans held up song requests but the rocker sticked to her regular set list, still playing such hits from the past as "I Want To Come Over" and "Come Into My Window."
Driving was a constant theme and she stated the latest album, 4th Street Feeling, is a "great record to blast in your car with the windows down." She performed that title track as well as other traveling songs such as "Kansas City." She autographed a hoodie then threw it to one lucky person in the audience in the middle of her set.
Etheridge had more banter than ever between singing, maybe feeling more comfortable speaking in public after a radio talk show and being political in her more-than-25-year career.
Seeing her perform live is always a treat and the true fans were there to support her, showing that she is welcome anytime in the Windy City. - Jerry Nunn
