The Democratic and Republican fields in the presidential contest have thinned out a bit—both John Edwards and Rudy Giuliani announced Jan. 30 that they are dropping out of their respective races.
Edwards announced his decision in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans—the same city where he started his presidential run in December 2006. He did not endorse either of the Democratic front runners, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, but stated that they both promised to make poverty a key issue in their campaigns.
On the other hand, Giuliani has thrown his support—behind Sen. John McCain. On Jan. 30, Giuliani flew to California to endorse McCain at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. McCain is expected to receive another boost in California—one of the more than 20 states taking part in Super Tuesday Feb. 5—when California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger endorses him.
Edwards and Giuliani both finished third in the Jan. 29 Florida primaries. The result was particularly damaging to Giuliani, who had skipped several previous caucuses and primaries to concentrate on Florida. |
