EXPO CHICAGO: The International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Artthe art fair and cultural destination offering tours, artist discussions, special exhibitions and uniquely curated site-specific projectstook place Sept. 19-22 at Navy Pier.
For many, the highlight was the general viewing, which featured 125 galleries representing 17 countries and 36 cities, including London, Zurich, San Francisco, Berlin, New York City, Madrid and Chicago.
Chicago exhibitors included the Rhona Hoffman Gallery, EDITION Chicago, The Mission (with Marcelo Grosman's engrossing "GUILTY!" series) and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, among many others. Exhibits showed an infinite amount of creativity. To wit: Oaks, Penn.-based The West Collection showed the works of Taiwanese artist Long-Bin Chen, known for sculptures composed of discarded paper publications. In addition, Montreal's Galerie Donald Browne showcased Jim Holyoak's human/animal body prints.
Among other highlights: Presenting Sponsor Northern Trust donated a piece by Jorinde Voigt from David Nolan and Corbett vs. Dempsey, selected by Mark Pascale, curator in the Department of Prints and Drawings of The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) to the Art Institute; Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue awarded Chicago-based artist Dan Gunn from moniquemeloche with the Artadia/EXPO CHICAGO Award; and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago received an artwork by emerging artist Amy Feldman funded by the Andree Stone Emerging Artist Prize.
In addition, the expo started with "Vernissage," a Sept. 19 preview benefiting the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago. More than 3,000 people attended.
