During a March 7 debate between mayoral candidates Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle, Preckwinkle lauded Lightfoot's openness about her sexuality when moderator Carol Marin asked each candidate what she admired about the other, The Chicago Tribune reported.
Lightfoot wondered if Preckwinkle's response was "blowing a dog whistle" to conservative voters. Preckwinkle later told reporters called that conclusion "ridiculous," adding that she has "always been a strong supporter of the LGBTQ community."
Lightfoot reply to Marin's question was that she admired Cook County's implementation of the national Affordable Care Act under Preckwinkle's watch.
State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, who is also lesbian, said it matters less why Preckwinkle said it than how it was taken. However, state Rep. Lamont Robinson defended Preckwinkle, saying she "was supportive of my successful run for the legislature last year, allowing me to become the first Black openly LGBTQ member of the Illinois General Assembly."
