DoJ files suit challenging Alabama's trans youth law

The U.S. Justice Department (DoJ) filed a complaint alleging that Alabama's controversial law banning gender-affirming care for youth is unconstitutional, according to AL.com .
In the complaint filed in federal court in Montgomery, the DoJ claimed the law signed by Gov. Kay Ivey violates the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause.
The DoJ wants the court to issue an injunction preventing the law from going into effect while challenges to the statute make their way through the courts.
Parents of transgender youth, medical professionals and others could receive up to 10 years in prison and a $15,000 fine if found violating the law. |
