Chester Set to Save Gant
You know you're not satisfied seeing Queer as Folk hottie Robert Gant confined to
the small screen. You want more. You want bigger. And soon you'll get it. Save Me,
the next film from actor/writer/director Craig Chester, will star Gant and former teen
star Chad Allen (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman). A romantic comedy set against the
backdrop of an ex-gay ministry, Save Me may be a first in that it will actually star
openly gay actors in both lead roles. The film is still in its pre-production phase and
will stay there until Chester finishes shooting his debut feature, Adam & Steve. But
once it's in the can, expect irreverently funny stuff on your art-house screens
sometime in 2005.
Stephen Fry's Favorite Things
Romeo thinks Stephen Fry is the coolest, and so should you. The hilarious Brit
actor/writer has a full plate these days, co-starring opposite Geoffrey Rush, Charlize
Theron, and Emily Watson in the upcoming TV movie The Life and Death of Peter
Sellers. Even better, he's now a director. His debut feature, Bright Young Things,
based on the Evelyn Waugh novel Vile Bodies, stars up-and-comer Emily Mortimer
(last seen in the indie Lovely & Amazing) and a huge cast that includes Stockard
Channing, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Broadbent, Simon Callow, and Peter O'Toole. Things is
a frothy tale of decadent socialites hell-bent on performing outrageous antics to get
their names into print—think Paris Hilton with a different accent. And think good
thoughts for a U.S. distribution deal while you're at it.
Reunited and It Feels So ...
Remember that great reality series on the WB called High School Reunion? No?
Well, someone besides Romeo must have watched it, because it's coming back for
another round of 28-year-olds petulantly slipping back into the high-school
personas they thought they'd shed in college. Sad geeks, a few brutish jocks, a
cabal of backstabbing cheerleaders, the skinny guy who's now a hunk, at least one
crazy slut, and, yes, a flamboyantly gay muscle boy and his redneck homophobe
nemesis, will convene at a plush resort, go on filmed 'dates' with each other, and
engage in brutal verbal smackdowns. Word is that Muscle Boy and Redneck have to
room together, but the real question is, who will the former pick for date night?
Watch in March 2004 for the answer.
The Guests Who Couldn't Leave
Fresh off the triumph that was Marci X, powerful gay producer-bear Scott Rudin has
set his sights on a film version of the forthcoming book Guests of the Ayatollah.
Black Hawk Down scribe Mark Bowden will pen the screenplay, which focuses on
the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, during which 52 Americans were held captive for
444 days, famously not-rescued by the Carter administration, and then released
after Ronald Reagan took office. The book isn't due until early 2005, so you'll be
waiting for the film longer than the hostages were actually held. In the meantime,
another Rudin production Romeo reported on earlier, the gay-themed Amazing
Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, is on a slightly faster track, since it's based on a book
that's actually finished—the Pulitzer-winning novel by Michael Chabon.
