Deb Mell appears to win tight race in 33rd Ward, some ballots left to count

Incumbent 33rd Ward Ald. Deb Mell, the city's only openly lesbian alderman, may have won the race now that absentee votes have been counted from the Feb. 24 election.
There are still a few ballots to go, so it may not be clear until March 9 if she has won.
As of Friday at 5 p.m., the Chicago Board of Elections shows her at 50.03 percent of the votesshe needs 50 percent plus one vote to avoid the runoff. Her 4,037 votes topped second-place challenger Tim Meegan's 2,754 votes, with 34.13 percent, and Annissa Wanat, with 1,278 votes or 15.84 percent.
