Before getting into the world of club promotion and music programming, I really had no idea how important gender was in choosing a playlist. Recently this came up twice. Once, when talking about a friend of mine, Phil Da Beatz, who deejays at Steamworks, and another time when I was doing the music for an "all-male" photo shoot. When men are getting sexy, men want men singing. Who knew? Now with IML figuratively at our back doors, I thought I'd share with you what I've learned, and what you can do to make a sexy soundtrack for the festivities.
So let's say it's early in IML weekend and you're just looking to get in that sexy mood, like a musical cock ring sending some blood to "needed areas." I'd recommend starting with some trip-hop. Now, trip-hop as a genre is pretty heavy on females, but you get some nice stuff from latter-day Sneaker Pimps, Tricky, or UNKLEa bit creepy, but it's IML. That's OK.
Looking to lure that daddy you've always wanted back to you hotel room? Promise him something old, 'cause he IS. Depending on if you're looking for a daddy or a granddaddy, go disco (Paul Parker, Dennis Parker) or new wave (Depeche Mode, Cure, New Order), but steer clear of Donna Summer and Toni Basil.
Getting ready to go out and having a pre-party in your room? If you're heading to Blow Off, the bear-heavy party at The Metro (my personal favorite on Saturday night) you must give props to Bob Mould, the co-DJ. Not to their Blow Off CD from 2006, but from Mould's delicious solo career (think dirty electro) or his legendary bands Sugar and Husker Du; both will completely rock your cock.
If you're still not convinced and are stuck in a Gaga-hole all weekend and have to hear a woman screaming, keep it butch, Dearie, and crank some Benatar or Stevie Nicks. Ladies with balls will do in a pinch, just can't promise anyone will wanna pinch you. But if you use my suggestions this weekend, you'll be a big musical dom top. |
