A Christmas Carol, Goodman Theatre, through Dec. 31. Kate Buckley's direction has gotten a little gigglier, but Joe Cerqua's spectacular aural F/X put the shivery back into the story, haunting Scrooge with voices, as well as spectral visions, from his own past. MSB
The Christmas Schooner, Bailiwick Repertory, through Dec. 31. Chicago had Marshall Field's in 1881, but no Christmas trees—until a Michigan ship sailed the wintry lake to bring them. This musical play, now in its 11th season, pays homage to the historical story. MSB
It's a Wonderful Life, American Theatre Company, through Dec. 31. This splendid 90-minute version of the movie, done as a 1940's live radio broadcast complete with singing commercials, stars likeable James Leaming as the ultimate Mr. Decent, George Bailey. JA
Nathan the Wise, Chicago Festival of the Arts, Theatre Building, through Dec. 31. This lovely plea for tolerance set during the Crusades sends a timely and timeless message. Director Rachel Silverman has assembled a talented ensemble for this troupe's debut. RR
