CHICAGOThe Sky will begin its 10th season by hosting more than 150 girls from the Chicago-land community for a Sports Expo on February 4 as part of the 29th-annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Some of Chicago's most inspiring and influential female sports leaders including Sky Guard/Forward Elena Delle Donne, Sky Head Coach & General Manager Pokey Chatman, and professional female broadcasters and journalists, will lead the event. Prior to the start of the expo, Sky Principal Owner Michael Alter and WNBA President Laurel Richie will reflect on the first 10 years of the franchise.
"Ten years ago I could not believe that Chicago, my hometown, was missing something so special — females who are world-class athletes, citizens and most importantly role models," said Alter. "People always stop me and say 'thank you' for bringing this franchise to Chicago but I really can't thank this town, and our fans enough, for embracing us since day one."
The Sports Expo will feature various stations designed to empower girls as the next generation of females in the sports industry. Sports professionals will teach basketball-specific skills, healthy habits, strength and conditioning techniques as well as share their paths to careers in sports broadcasting and journalism. The event demonstrates the positive impact a professional women's basketball team can make in the community by inspiring greatness through strong, athletic and educated roles models.
"National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a tremendous platform to celebrate our history and future," said Chicago Sky President and CEO Adam Fox. "Against the backdrop of this special day we are proud to tip off our 10th season by showcasing positive role models who lead both on the court and in the community with the goal of inspiring generations for another 10 years and beyond."
Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day supports the Sky's mission to showcase some of the best female athletes in the world who lead both on and off the basketball court, while passionately giving back to the community.
