Goalkeeper Emily Boyd returned to the Chicago Red Stars starting core for the first time in two years. However, Chicago fell to the North Carolina Courage in Cary, North Carolina, 1-0 on Aug. 15.
Boyd's 2021 debut was both a long time coming and an emotional one, as it marked her NWSL appearance since 2019 after coming off an ACL injury. Alyssa Mautz made another return to the Red Stars starting lineup, beginning the game in Chicago's midfield in place of the injured Morgan Gautrat. Mautz finished the game with 27 touches, a tackle, 17 passes and a blocked shot before being subbed off in the second half.
North Carolina's Amy Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick to give the Courage the lead it needed.
The Red Stars next travel to play Racing Louisville on Wed., Aug. 18, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
