A Little Night Music, Writers' Theatre, Glencoe, extended through July 22. This is a gloriously intimate and chamber-sized approach to Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's sophisticated and romantic 1973 Broadway musical. It's wonderful to be so up close and personal with such great performers without the aid of amplification. SCM
My Kind of Town, TimeLine Theatre, through July 29. Chicago's police torture scandal of the past few decades is expertly explored in John Conroy's fictionalized world-premiere drama that pushes audiences to ponder what they would do in the characters' dilemma-filled situations. SCM
Take Her To See the Maco Lights, Prologue Theatre Company at Luna Central (formerly Live Bait Theater), through June 2. If romance is based in uncertainty, can you get any more romantic than a lovelorn ghost unsure, himself, of what's real and what's not in this intimate little play performed across the street from a cemetery? When the Rain Stops Falling, Circle Theatre, through June 17. A jigsaw puzzle, this Australian play is about four generations, two families and two continentsbut stick with it for its richly poetic rewards in dealing with love and loss. It's beautifully acted against gorgeous projections. JA
