CHICAGO, IL December 13, 2022 In its continual efforts of creating and protecting "brave spaces" for transgender and queer Black people to affirm their dignity, Brave Space Alliance (BSA) is providing a free name change clinic this week.
BSA hosts the clinic with Transformative Justice Law Project Dec. 16, 2022; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at BSA Headquarters, 1515 East 53rd Street, 3rd Floor.
"We believe that folks should have access to any resources that will allow them to live affirmed and supported lives. To find affirmation in a name and in identity is integral for many queer folks," said Tee Smith, BSA Communications Lead. "Therefore, the "Name Change Clinic" provides Queer and Trans folks with free assistance for the name change and gender marker change process, Tee went on to say. "This process can be extremely daunting, but this clinic is an intentional collaboration with the Transformative Justice Law Project to minimize those hurdles. The long-term goal of this project is for all folks to have a lived experience of dignity, self-determination, and free expression."
About BSA: Under the leadership of Interim CEO, Jae Rice, the first and only Black transgender-male head a LGBTQ+ organization, Brave Space Alliance is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ Center located on the South Side of Chicago, dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ individuals on the South and West sides of the city. BSA strives to empower, embolden, and educate its community through mutual aid, knowledge-sharing, and the creation of community-sourced resources as we build toward the liberation of all oppressed peoples. BSA wants Black and Brown queer and trans people to be seen, wherever and however they want to be seen. Further, the organization acknowledges that Black and Brown community residents deserve services that are accessible to them, in the neighborhoods in which they live.
