There's no question that Dolores DeLuce makes bold statements wherever she goes, but some may be surprised to know she's writing them down. July 2013 marked the release of her first book — My Life, a Four Letter Word: Confessions of a Counter Culture Diva published by Double Delinquent Press. We don't think she's really the illegitimate daughter of Divine, but she did live with him for a long while and she does have stories to tell. Lambda Literary says, "…like a lotus in clear water she brightly bloomed into one of the city's most recognizable actors of the outré —with an added dash of Brechtian politics and style. She was one of the Queens of the Scene; a heady brew of outrageous theater, nascent gay lib, and gender-bending disco days and nights..."
In October, Dolores will be visiting Chicago promoting her book and signing copies. On Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 5:00 pm — 7:00 pm, she will be appearing at the Center on Halsted at 3656 North Halsted, Chicago, IL 60613-5974. She will also be appearing on October 9, 2013 at Women and Children First at 5233 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL 60640.
In her memoir, DeLuce, a five-foot diva in six-inch heels, takes readers on a bumpy ride from her gray days in New Jersey through her escape to the tumultuous post-Stonewall days of "70s Venice, Hollywood, and gay San Francisco. When her Italian American family rejected her after the birth of her mixed-race daughter, she created a new family with the most unlikely people under the most unusual circumstances.
Her new family included Divine, the Cockettes, assorted bad boys on Venice Beach, and her loving gay "husbands." Along the way she met John Waters, Edie Massey, Rip Taylor and Joan Rivers, was crowned "Miss Alternative L.A." and won the "1.98 Beauty Show. Through tears and glitter, Dolores survived her bitter family estrangements only to face the pain of the AIDS crisis first hand. |
