Another gay pride parade has been banned in Poland—this time in the western city of Poznan. Mayor Ryszard Grobelny based his Nov. 15 decision on concerns about 'protection of private property.'
Parade organizers said Grobelny simply caved in to right-wing politicians, churches and 'family' organizations that strongly opposed the march.
Despite the ban, several dozen gays marched on Nov. 19. According to local media, police dragged off and interrogated 65 marchers when they responded to orders to halt by sitting down in the street.
Warsaw's gay pride parade also was banned this year, by then-Mayor Lech Kaczynski, who has since become Poland's president.
Some 2,500 GLBTs marched on June 11 anyhow. Around 300 antigay protesters hurled eggs and shouted slurs at them. Ten people were arrested and three were injured, including a policeman.
Gays also have been under attack from new Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, who has announced elimination of the government agency that advocates for GLBT equality—the Office of Plenipotentiary for Equal Status of Women and Men.
Marcinkiewicz also recently told Newsweek: 'The family is natural and the state must stand guard over the family. I don't care if someone is a homosexual or not, and even if I found out something like that, I wouldn't judge a person differently than on their actions alone. But if that person tries to infect others with their homosexuality, then the state must intervene in this violation of freedom.' — Rex Wockner
