Announcing National Coming Out Day during its intro announcements showed that About Face Theatre could be the gayest ( and proudest ) company in town.
Sporting a slogan that celebrates adventurous plays advancing dialogue on gender and sexual identity is almost unheard of in any region, and About Face revels in it.
After 18 years of being in the business this was the first year for a formal gala and there was hardly an empty seat in the house.
The historic Stan Mansion in Logan Square was not only a new venue but a kick-off to a new season of entertainment from these talented performers. The theme was "Black and Tan Supper Club" and the donors came out in 1920s regalia. A sit-down dinner was offered while various singers took to the stage and same-sex dancing partners moved on the floor to the retro tunes.
The troupe showed that it had the stuff to not only raise money for a successful season but had a enjoyable night doing it.
