June Is Not Enough: An LGBTQ+ Nonfiction Writing Class 6:30pm
The idea behind the class is to promote and foster the work of LGBTQ+ people. Writers who register for the class will be pushed to create their bravest, boldest, and most revealing work in a collaborative workshop environment celebrating queerness.
"The class will be a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment where we can all learn from each other and express our ideas through discussion and writing," said writer Jeremy Owens, the class's instructor, in a press release. "We'll be working toward a final goal of writing a piece for a public reading."
Each week, students will read and discuss essays from various LGBTQ+ writers in search of themes, humor, voice, structure and other elements to incorporate into their own work. These pieces by writers such as James Baldwin, Jennifer Finney Boylan, Alexander Chee, Roxane Gay and Janet Mock will serve as a jumping-off point to generate work during class and beyond.
The six-session in-person workshop will meet Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. starting Aug. 17 at StoryStudio Chicago, 4043 N. Ravenswood Ave. The cost of the class is $365. For more information and to register, visit www.storystudiochicago.org/classes/classes/nonfiction/lgbtq-queer-nonfiction/ .
Two scholarships for 50 percent off the class tuition are also available to LGBTQ+ writers. For more information, email StoryStudio Chicago directly at info@storystudiochicago.org .
