Long-time Chicago gay activist Jim Osgood (a/k/a Jim Bradford) died Dec. 25. A 'Celebration of Jim's Life' will
be set soon.
James Bradshaw Osgood was born April 6, 1932 in New Castle, Penn., the son of the late
Harlow Seavert Osgood and late Dorothy Bradshaw (Wilson) Osgood. He and his late partner, Edward Louzao,
were together for 47 years. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Charles F. and Eugenia Osgood of
Washington, D.C., his niece, cousins and many friends. Jim spent the last 3-1/2 years of his life in the Assisted
Living Unit of The Kenwood of Lake View. He died on Christmas Day at the age of 71. Appreciation is extended
to Raymond Plummer, Jim's primary care-giver these past months, for the outstanding and exceptional care
he provided for Jim. At his request, his ashes will be buried at Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, next to Edward.
The Cremation Society of Illinois is handling the arrangements.
Jim received his Bachelor of Arts degree
from the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Chicago in 1954 and his Master of Library Science degree
from the School of Library and Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh in 1962. Jim worked as a
translator and interpreter for the United Nations prior to his moving to Chicago. Following a career as a
librarian, he retired from Kennedy-King College in Chicago May 14, 1994.
Jim was a Buddhist and had
strong beliefs in social causes for human rights, which made him an activist and valued member of various
organizations. Jim (a/k/a Jim Bradford) was an activist for gay rights, serving on the Board of Directors and as
President of Mattachine Midwest in the late '60s and early '70s. His work helped many individuals come to
terms with their homosexuality, long before the efforts became fashionable and acceptable. Other
organizations he was involved with include groups opposing the death penalty, groups supporting draft
resistance during the Vietnam War era, peace and the anti-war movements, Tibetan human rights and the
Moratorium, to name a few. Jim and Ed were members of the 57th Street Friends Meeting (Quakers). Jim's
activism will long be remembered in the years to come.

Horizons Mature Adult Program (MAP) of Center on Halsted begins the new year with a seminar on
spirituality on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 10, 1-3 p.m., 961 W. Montana. The Seminar session titled Spiritual
Travels: Insight Into Your Unique Journey will be presented by Dr. John Fusco of Stonewall Psychological
Services, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with an M.A. in Theology.
Horizons Mature Adult Seminar Series
will offer a workshop to allow participants to express some significant insights about themselves through a
creative and fun process. 'Constructing masks out of collage materials is a wonderful avenue to reflect on the
various faces we have presented in our lives,' says Sally Lindberg, seminar presenter and art therapist.
'These could be memories of being closeted or recollections of a loving relationship.' The Seminar, Saturday,
Jan. 24, 1-3 p.m. at 961 W. Montana, is designed for LGBT adults age 45 and up. The Seminar, titled: Let's
Face It!, will be presented by Lindberg and Carl Wilson, both of Horizons Psychotherapy Services
department.

Sexual Shadow: Assessment & Treatment of the Gay Sex Addict, is a seminar presented by the Chicago
Training Collaborative, hosted by Howard Brown Health Center, with instructor Joe Kort, MA, MSW, of Michigan,
Friday, Jan. 16th, 4025 N. Sheridan Rd. Clinicians will learn to accurately assess and diagnose sexual
addiction in gay men. Kort is the author of 10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do To Improve Their Lives, and he
teaches a Gay and Lesbian Studies course at Wayne State University.
