Boxing's highest national governing body, USA Boxing, added a transgender athlete policy to its rulebook that requires genital-reassignment surgery and strict hormone testing for adults before competition, NBC News noted.
The updates make the guideline among the strictest policies for trans athletes.
The guidelinesdated August 2022 and released as part of USA Boxing's 2024 rulebookare being criticized for including trans women at all, as many world associations governing sports and activities (from cycling to swimming to even fishing) have totally excluded trans women.
Pro-LGBTQ+ group Athlete Ally has long argued that surgery requirements and testosterone testing "jeopardize athletes' dignity and autonomy," and may harm their health.
