Santos voted out of Congress
2023-12-01

Now-former U.S. Rep. George Santos (R-New York) was voted out of Congress on Dec. 1.

Santos is the sixth House member in U.S. history to be booted from Congress, and the third since the Civil War, according to CNBC.

The removal of Santos lowers the number of House Republicans to 221, with 213 Democrats—making it even more difficult for the GOP majority to pass legislation without Democratic support.

The highly unusual move, not seen in 20 years, had a final tally of 311-114-2—more than the two-thirds vote needed to expel Santos, The Hill noted. (Eight people did not vote.) It turned out that 105 Republicans joined almost all Democrats to remove the scandal-plagued Santos after just 11 months in office. House Speaker Mike Johnson (known for his anti-LGBTQ+ past) voted against removing Santos, who is openly gay.

Among Illinois reps, the votes were as follows: Mike Bost (Republican-Nay), Nikki Budzinski (Democrat-Yea), Sean Casten (D-Yea), Danny Davis (D-Yea), Bill Foster (D-Yea), Chuy Garcia (D-Yea), Jonathan Jackson (D-Present), Robin Kelly (D-Yea), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Yea), Darin LaHood (R-Yea), Mary Miller (R-Nay), Mike Quigley (D-Yea), Delia Ramirez (D-Yea), Jan Schakowsky (D-Yea), Brad Schneider (D-Yea), Eric Sorensen (D-Yea) and Lauren Underwood (D-Yea). The votes are at Website Link Here .

Santos—who has admitted to lying about his background—easily survived a bipartisan effort to expel him from the House of Representatives on Nov. 1. Schneider had voted to retain Santos at that time.
