Soccer icon Megan Rapinoe ended her legendary career on Nov. 11, as an injury caused her to leave her team's championship loss in the NWSL championship, ESPN reported.
Rapinoe's team, the OL Reign, fell to NJ/NY Gotham FC 2-1.
"It felt like just a huge pop," Rapinoe said about her non-contact injury that forced a substitution early in the first half at San Diego's Snapdragon Stadium and that she worried was a torn Achilles tendon. "[It was] the worst possible outcome. I just thank God I have, like, a f—-ing deep well of sense of humor."
Snapdragon's field had been criticized for divots left by the San Diego State University football team; however, Rapinoe said the pitch was not to blame for her injury.
Thanks to two assists from Midge Purce and a game winner from Spanish international Esther Gonzalez, Gotham claimed their first NWSL title.
