USA Cycling unveils updated trans policy
2023-10-24

USA Cycling (USAC), the governing body for the sport of cycling in the United States, unveiled its revised Transgender Athlete Participation Policy, Cycling Weekly reported.

In doing so, USAC is aligning itself with the standards set by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for international competition while establishing new categories for transgender athletes at the domestic level.

Starting Jan. 1, 2024, trans athletes seeking to compete at USAC-sanctioned events will be categorized as either Group A or Group B athletes, depending on their discipline and race category.

Among other things, transgender women in Group A (which includes cyclists as well as mountain-bike and BMX athletes) must undergo a so-called "elite athlete fairness evaluation application" to be reviewed by an independent medical panel.

As of July 17, 2023, the UCI banned trans women from competing in women's categories in UCI-sanctioned events in all disciplines if they transitioned after puberty.
