Dozens of people were arrested for attending a gay wedding in Nigeria under the country's strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws, according to media reports.
The number of arrestees have varied from 60 to more than 100. More than 60 were detained.
Two of those detained in the arrestsone of the country's largest targeting LGBTQ+ peoplegot married at the event, Delta State Command spokesman Bright Edafe said at a press conference, according to The Independent. He added that homosexuality would "never be tolerated" in Nigeria.
The country exercises the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, which states that anyone belonging to an LGBTQ+ organization can get up to 10 years in jail, and anyone married to someone of the same sex can receive up to 14 years.
Nigeria is Africa's most populous country, with approximately 230 million individuals.
