Lesbian tennis player ends 23-year career
2023-01-23

Australian tennis player Sam Stosur has called it a career after back-to-back losses at the Australian Open, Yahoo! Sport noted.

Stosur—an out lesbian who played for 23 years—lost in the first round of the women's doubles with Alize Cornet, before another loss alongside Matt Ebden in the mixed doubles.

Her peak in singles play happened in 2011, when she beat Serena Williams in the US Open final to capture her only Grand Slam singles title. In doubles, Stosur won four Grand Slam titles in women's doubles and three in mixed.

When announcing her retirement recently, Stosur said she was looking forward to spending more time with her young family, which include her partner, Liz, and their daughter. She ranks 22nd on the list of all-time prize-money winners in women's tennis with $28.82 million.
