Report: Anti-trans violence doubled between 2017 and 2021
2022-10-19

The number of homicides of transgender people in the country nearly doubled between 2017 and 2021, and were mostly driven by gun violence, according to a new report from Everytown for Gun Safety, The Hill reported.

Known transgender homicides jumped 93 percent over the last four years, from 29 killings in 2017 to 56 in 2021—and 73 percent involved a firearm.

The report noted that anti-trans violence, especially gun-involved incidents, is concentrated in the Black community, and 73 percent of known trans homicide victims between 2017 and 2021 were Black women. However, Black people account for just 13 percent of the nation's total transgender population.

The Human Rights Campaign announced last year that 2021 had officially become the worst year in recent history for LGBTQ+ state legislative attacks—and it was also the deadliest year on record for transgender and gender-nonconforming people in the United States. Also, several states passed more lenient gun laws during that same time.

The report (last updated on Oct. 11) is at Website Link Here .
