2022-10-14

Two people are dead in connection to an Oct. 12 shooting in front of a popular LGBTQ+ bar in the old town neighborhood of the Slovak capital of Bratislava, The Washington Blade reported.

The Polícia Slovenskej republiky said the incident at the Teplaren bar on Zamocka Street in central Bratislava left two young men dead and one woman injured. According to Reuters, authorities identified those killed as 23-year-old Matus H. and 26-year-old Juraj V; a third victim, Radoslava T., 28, was wounded in her leg.

Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger condemned the double murder in a press conference telling media outlets that "extremism is unacceptable." President Zuzana Caputova called on politicians to stop spreading hate. "My thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims of yesterday's horrific attack in Bratislava and everyone in the LGBTIQ+ community affected by it," she tweeted.

Caputova came to the scene of the shooting on the afternoon of Oct. 13, laying flowers in front of Teplaren and embracing the owner of the bar.

The LGBTQ+-rights group ILGA-Europe also condemned the attack, saying, "Matus&Juraj were cut down in the prime of their lives simply for being who they are."

The shooter—identified as 19-year-old Juraj Krajcik, the son of a prominent member of the far-right Vlast party—was himself found deceased after a search of several hours.
