DANCE Rogers Park group Synapse Arts to hold Sept. 17 fundraiser
2022-09-06

On Saturday, Sept. 17, there will be another "Crosswalk Dance" from the Rogers Park company Synapse Arts as well as another Jarvis Square Artisan Market and the celebration of National Dance Day.

The event will take place 12 noon-2 p.m. at the 1500 block of West Jarvis Avenue.

Established in 2010 by American Dance Movement co-founder Nigel Lythgoe and Congresswoman Elanor Holmes Norton, "National Dance Day is an annual celebration dedicated to dance that encourages Americans of all ages to incorporate dance into their lives." So Synapse Arts will mark the day with a community-focused performance designed to engage neighborhood residents and visitors in the creation and performance of dance theater.

As part of its summer-long series of Crosswalk Dances across the city, this performance will start with a movement warmup that audience members and passers-by can join. Everyone will then be invited to participate in segments of the performance itself.

The Crosswalk Dance will be presented as part of the Jarvis Square Artisan Market, a monthly event featuring food and live music along with local vendors, artisans and makers of all kinds. Synapse will participate in the market through the sponsorships of Charmers Cafe and Jarvis Square Tavern.

Among other things, Synapse Arts provides mentorships and opportunities for artists from marginalized communities, including women, BIPOC artists and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
