Rape, murder of Kenyan lesbian spark outrage
2022-04-29

Kenyan authorities said six men who raped and murdered Sheila Adhiambo Lumumba, 25, on April 19 in her home in Karatina actually targeted her because of her sexual orientation, The Washington Blade reported.

The body of Lumumba, a non-binary lesbian, was discovered several days after their death by colleagues at the resort they worked with after they failed to show up for a couple of days, according to an item from The Advocate that cited K24 TV.

On social media, many have used #JusticeForSheila to call on authorities to appropriately investigate Lumumba's death and find those responsible.

Amnesty International Kenya wrote, "No one deserves such cruel treatment. Sheila didn't have to experience all this pain. We are standing in solidarity with the family of Sheila Adhiambo during this trying moment and we shall follow up on this case until justice is delivered."

"Queer people's right to live is not hinged on anyone's beliefs. Some of those opinions are dangerous and biased. Homophobia in the name of appeasing your beliefs gets people killed," said Kenyan human-rights activist Njeri wa Migwi, according to the Blade. "Sheila is not the first. We have Erica and Wawira; names people will soon forget, like their lives didn't matter."

Apart from South Africa, many African countries still don't protect the LGBTQ community, despite some of them having legalized same-sex relations.
