According to NBC News, Russian state news agency TASS reported that U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner's detention in Russia has been extended until May 19.
TASS cited the Khimki Court of the Moscow Region.
Griner, a six-foot-nine lesbian athlete who plays for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, has been detained for weeks after Russian officials said they found vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis in her luggage at the Sheremetyevo airport, near Moscow.
The offense could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
Ekaterina Kalugina, a member of Public Monitoring Commission, told TASS that Griner is sharing a cell with two inmates who "had no previous convictions and are charged with drug-related articles."
The Las Vegas Raiders are releasing Carl Nassib, the defensive end who made history last year as the first openly gay active player in NFL history, NBC News noted in a separate piece.
Nassib, a six-year veteran, has played for the Raiders for two seasons, generating four sacks, 49 tackles and an interception, according to NFL.com. The site reported that the decision to cut Nassib, who had an annual base salary of $7.75 million, was a financial one.
Cyd Zeigler, a co-founder of LGBTQ+ sports site Outsports, agreed that the choice was economic and not related to Nassib's sexual orientation.
Former NFL player Ryan O'Callaghanwho came out as gay in June 2017, after his time in the leaguesaid Nassib's career demonstrates that players do not need to compromise their LGBTQ+ identities in sports.
