I am writing this letter to the editor about the article that appeared on the Windy City Times website titled "A look at Northalsted/Boystown bars since 2020 town hall on racism," written by Cris Villalonga-Vivoni.
Also, I had an opportunity to view an online video put together by Chicago Drag Black Council concerning the same topic.
I was also impressed with Sidetrack, Berlin, Hydrate and Roscoe's Tavern, whose representatives promised to increase the number of Black staff/performers, create safe spaces for them and establish racism-incident plans.
I believe all individuals involved were authentic and on the road to healing. Bravo!
Continue to listen to each other's stories in a respectful way, and continue to educate the community.
I would encourage the organizers to make all bar owners welcome at your next roundtable on systemic racism.
I am encouraged by the organizers and those bar owners who sent representatives to attend the town hall.
