Actress Kate Winslet is "done with not being honest" about LGBTQ people in Hollywood, LGBTQ Nation noted. The world-acclaimed Titanic star dropped a bombshell claim in an interview: young LGBTQ actors in Hollywood are actively being encouraged to stay closeted if they want to maintain their careers. The topic was spurred from her most recent film, Ammonite, in which she plays a lesbian character. "I cannot tell you the number of young actors I know—some well-known, some starting out—who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles," she told the Sunday Times. "Now that's fucked up."

Former Democratic presidential candidate/current New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang proposed a sweeping "arts revival" proposal that would include using city funds and corporate commitments to purchase "hundreds of thousands" of Broadway and off-Broadway tickets at reduced prices to "bring people back into theatre seats" and stimulate economic growth, Deadline noted. Yang said his "Always New York" campaign echoes a post-9/11 program in which 35,000 Broadway tickets were donated to NYC & Company, the city's tourism bureau, and passed along to anyone who spent $500 at New York City stores or on other shows. Speaking of Broadway, just more than a year since COVID-19 shuttered it, three-time Tony winner Nathan Lane and Tony-winning choreographer Savion Glover performed before an audience at the St. James Theatre—marking the first time since Broadway's closure that the door to one of its houses opened, Variety noted. As part of the NY PopsUp event series, Lane and Glover performed for a gathering of fewer than 150 staffers from The Actors Fund and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. During the Directors Guild of America's (DGA's) streamed 73rd ceremony, openly gay industry icon Paris Barclay was bestowed with the guild's Honorary Life Member Award by Ava DuVernay, Deadline noted. Barclay—the first African-American and openly gay president of the DGA—said, "To receive a reward that was first given to D.W. Griffith in 1938, I think that says a lot about how far this guild has come in just a few short generations." Also at the DGA event, history was made when Nomadland director Chloe Zhao won the marquee prize—marking the second time the DGA has given the guild's top prize to a female director, after Kathryn Bigelow for 2008's The Hurt Locker.

After years of conversation and chatter, the Queer as Folk reboot just got a eight-episode order at Peacock, out.com noted. Although this news was reported in 2019, NBC Universal has now announced it officially. The new version of the show will be a "reimagining" of Russell T. Davies original British series that was a 10-episode project that ran from 1999 to 2000. (The U.S. version, set in Pennsylvania, ran for five seasons, and starred Hal Sparks, Scott Lowell, Gale Harold, Randy Harrison and Peter Paige.) The new version was created and executive-produced by Stephen Dunn and will be set in New Orleans.

Emmy-nominated comedian Margaret Cho, Fortune Feimster (Office Christmas Party), Skai Jackson (Jessie), Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll) and Paris Jackson (Gringo; Lee Daniels' Star TV series) have joined the cast of Hulu's latest collaboration with American High, entitled Sex Appeal, a press release noted. They join previously announced leads Mika Abdalla (Project Mc2) and Jake Short (All Night). The plot of this comedy is as follows: Avery Hansen-White doesn't do things she isn't excellent at. So when her long-distance boyfriend hints at wanting to take their relationship to the next level at an upcoming STEM conference ("nerd prom"), she sets out to master her sexuality.

Singer/songwriter/actor Darren Criss released his new single and lyric video for "F*kn Around," a press release noted. An ode to his garage band upbringing, "F*kn Around" has been described as "an unapologetic alt-pop head-nod anthem, highlighting Darren's musicianship with his driving dirty bassline groove and even dirtier lead guitar counterparts." Zendaya has been confirmed to join the cast of Space Jam: A New Legacy and will be the voice of Lola Bunny, NME.com noted. The series will transform a group of men into real-life Magic Mikes; the winner will pocket a cash prize and an opportunity to perform on the Magic Mike Live stage in Las Vegas.

Adepero Oduye (Pariah; the TV show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has joined Vera Farmiga in Five Days at Memorial, a drama about how the aftermath of the deadly 2005 hurricane played out at a New Orleans hospital, The Hollywood Reporter noted. It's based on a nonfiction book by Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink. John Ridley (12 Years a Slave; TV's American Crime) and Carlton Cuse (TV series Lost and Bates Motel) are adapting the book, which tracks the five days after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Oduye will play Karen Wynn, nurse manager of the intensive care unit at Memorial Hospital and the head of its ethics committee.

The Kristen Wiig/Annie Mumolo movie Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar is now on DVD, Blu-Ray combo pack and On Demand, a Lionsgate press release noted. In the film, lifelong friends Barb and Star embark on the adventure of a lifetime when they decide to leave their small Midwestern town for the first time—ever. Out actor James Cusati-Moyer is joining Dwayne Johnson in DC's upcoming movie Black Adam, although his role is currently unknown, out.com noted. Black Adam will feature Johnson as the titular villain—one of Shazam's greatest enemies. The film will also introduce the Justice Society to the DC movies; this includes Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindel as Cyclone.

Page Six reported that the late music icon Prince is releasing a new album entitled Welcome 2 America, according to his estate. The estate of the "Purple Rain" singer—who died of an accidental opioid overdose in 2016—is set to unveil a collection of the estimated 8,000 unreleased songs he kept hidden in a vault at his Paisley Park studios near his hometown of Minneapolis. His posthumous 12-track anthology is scheduled for release in late July, and will debut on CBS' 60 Minutes.

AMC revealed during The Walking Dead's "Here's Negan" season 10c finale that the zombie apocalypse series based on Robert Kirkman's comics will premiere its 11th and final season Aug. 22, Deadline noted. Set to run well into 2022 and with a spinoff already in the works for Norman Reedus' and Melissa McBride's fan-favorite characters, the last season of TWD will be released in blocks of approximately eight episodes each.

Actor Ronen Rubinstein, who plays Rob Lowe's gay son on Fox TV's 9-1-1: Lone Star, came out as bisexual in an interview with Variety, according to Queerty. "I fully identify as bisexual," Rubinstein, 27, said in a Zoom chat with Marc Malkin. "I literally just got goosebumps saying that. It feels so good to talk about it, it feels so good to finally be comfortable with it." He added, "The biggest thing for me is where I come from [Staten Island], it's like people like me and people who have identified as bisexual or gay or as any part of the community, you're just not welcomed. It's as brutally honest as that."

DMX—the first hip-hop artist ever to top the charts with his initial five albums and almost his sixth—died at age 50, Deadline reported. The rapper/actor suffered a heart attack April 2 and had been in the intensive care unit in a White Plains, New York, hospital on life support ever since. DMX dropped his major-label debut, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, in May 1998; the album eventually sold 5 million copies.

In his debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is presenting the documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), a press release noted. This movie focuses on The Harlem Cultural Festival—which took place during six weeks in 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock. The feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by B.B. King, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Stevie Wonder and more. Summer of Soul premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. Taylor Swift has released Fearless (Taylor's Version). With the arrival of Fearless (Taylor's Version), Swift extended an unprecedented record, standing out as the only artist in history to release nine albums with sales of at least 500,000 copies in a single week. Dolby Cinema and director Edgar Wright announced that the cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World will be returning to theaters to celebrate its (slightly late) 10th anniversary with a new version that's been specifically "reimagined" for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, Polygon noted. This new theatrical version of the movie will be released on April 30 for one week only, and only in Dolby Cinema theaters. Also, there are plans to release the long awaited 4K Blu-Ray of the movie after the Dolby Cinema release.

Fox has ordered Crime Scene Kitchen, a new baking competition series with a twist, with Joel McHale set to host, Deadline noted. Chef Curtis Stone and cake artist Yolanda Gampp will serve as judges on the series, slated to premiere Wed., May 26. Crime Scene Kitchen is described as a culinary guessing game in which bakers must decode what type of dessert was made, when all that's left are the crumbs, flour trails and a few elusive clues. They must then re-create the recipe for Stone and Gampp, who will determine how closely it matches the missing dessert—and how good it tastes.

Apple won an auction and acquired the script to develop an hour-long drama series that will have Justin Timberlake playing the late Gong Show host Chuck Barris, Deadline noted. The untitled series will be based on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, a 1984 memoir in which Barris made suspect claims that being the zany Gong Show host and creator of game shows like The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game was cover for his real job: CIA assassin who took out enemies of the state in the 1960s and '70s. The book was turned into a film that George Clooney directed, with Sam Rockwell playing Barris.

Sheryl Underwood broke her silence on Sharon Osbourne's recent exit from The Talk, people.com noted. Since the initial confrontation on March 10, Underwood said that she and Osbourne have not spoken. (However, in an effort to prove she did, in fact, reach out to Underwood, Osbourne leaked her text messages to her former co-host to the Daily Mail, TooFab.com noted.) More than a year after the once-powerful producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison, Harvey Weinstein filed his appeal of the multiple sex crimes that a New York jury found him guilty of back in early 2020, Deadline reported. "Mr. Weinstein was tried in a venue, the atmosphere of which was permeated with negative publicity about him and his alleged relationships with women," the 190-page appellate brief stated.

British actor Thandiwe Newton is reverting to the original Shona spelling of her name, after decades of being known and credited as "Thandie Newton," Variety noted. The Emmy-winning Westworld actress was born Melanie Thandiwe Newton Parker. "That's my name. It's always been my name. I'm taking back what's mine," the actor said in an interview with British Vogue. The Vogue article also states that "the W was carelessly missed out from her first credit," which was in the 1991 movie Flirting, which co-starred Nicole Kidman.
