Outgoing President Donald Trump conveyed on social media that he will not be attending new President Joe Biden's inauguration.
"To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th," Trump tweeted Jan. 8, according to The Chicago Tribune.
This post concluded an extraordinary week that saw Trump supporters storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. That actionwhich many said Trump instigated, and which temporarily halted the certification of Biden's Electoral College victoryled to the deaths of five people (including a Capitol officer), dozens of arrests and resignations of several Trump appointees.
Trump will be the first incumbent president since Andrew Johnson to skip his successor's inauguration.
Vice President Mike Pence is slated to attend Biden's inauguration, Politico and other media outlets noted.
