CHICAGO — State Senator Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) is encouraging everyone to sign up for health coverage during the Affordable Care Act's Open Enrollment period, which lasts until Dec. 15.

"The Affordable Care Act expanded health care coverage to the uninsured and underinsured, and it is more important than ever during this pandemic," Feigenholtz said. "Every day, our office receives calls from constituents wondering where to turn for health care. The annual open enrollment period assures access, and COVID-19 has made the ACA more important than ever."

This year's ACA open enrollment period will allow Illinoisans to choose from three tiers of coverage: Gold, Silver, and Bronze, spread across 179 plans from eight insurance providers. Anyone already covered under an ACA plan will automatically be enrolled in the same or a similar insurance plan if they don't make a different selection.

Qualifying individuals can receive tax credits, which help reduce payments and offset costs. Last year, more than 240,000 people in Illinois received tax credits, with an average monthly payment of $153.

"No one should ever have to worry about whether or not they have health coverage," Feigenholtz said. "With open enrollment, it's easy to find or change health care options that meet your needs, but for life-changing circumstances, the ACA marketplace is always open, even if the open enrollment period has closed."
