On Sunday, Dec. 4, Jay Records will release a 1997 recording of the musical Anyone Can Whistle, which originally had music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim as well as a book by Arthur Laurents.
The production originally opened at the Majestic Theater on Broadway on April 4, 1964; it starred Angela Lansbury, Lee Remick and Harry Guardino.
A release announcing the Dec. 4 release stated, "It is uncanny how much the tsunami of unprecedented political and social upheaval in the USA in 2020 mirrors the plot and essence of it." Julia Mackenzie, Maria Friedman and John Barrowman led the 1997 West End recordings. The recordings started in 1997 at the famous Abbey Road Studios and were completed in New York, with John Yap producing.
The release of this recording is a gift to Sondheim to celebrate his 90th birthday.
