Call for BIPOC/TGNC artists for mural painting Aug. 8-9
2020-08-07

In partnership with the 40th Ward and Ald. Andre Vasquez, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce ( ACC ) has issued an immediate callout for volunteer artists for this weekend ( Aug. 8-9 ) to paint the message "BLACK TRANS LIVES MATTER" as a street mural at 1500 W. Catalpa Ave., between Clark Street and Ashland Avenue.

A local Andersonville artist has offered a $2,000 donation match to help raise the funds to pay each artist for his/her/their time.

Because of the priority in recruiting BIPOC ( Black, indigenous and people of color ) and trans/GNC artists for the street mural, an artist in Andersonville—who wishes to remain anonymous—has come forward to offer up to $2,000 in matched donations to assist ACC in raising the funds necessary to compensate the participating artists. ( The artists' two young children are also matching $20 and $2 respectively, to the fund. )

ACC began the process of asking permission to paint the mural with the 40th Ward and the City of Chicago six weeks ago, but did not hear back from the City until late on Aug. 6. The city officially greenlit the project for the weekend of Aug. 8- 9 in response to the recent death of activist Caleb Reed in Emerson Park, which is also located in the 40th Ward. Barricades have already been dropped at 1500 W. Catalpa Ave. for the street closure and cleaning.

Artists will be responsible for bringing their own materials, but the letters will already be stenciled and primed. The sign-up form is at Website Link Here .
