Washington, DC — Exactly one month after the New York primary election, enough ballots have been counted to declare LGBTQ Victory Fund endorsed candidate Jabari Brisport the winner of the Democratic primary for New York's 25th Senate District. With no general election challenger, Brisport will become the first openly LGBTQ person of color ever elected to the New York state legislature come November.
Victory Fund invested heavily in Bisport's race, raising nearly $11,000 for his campaign and providing additional visibility through its earned media and social media programs.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, released the following statement about the victory:
"Jabari inspired an army of super volunteers that knocked on thousands of doors, pivoted to online organizing with the onset of the pandemic, and remained committed to ensuring he became the first out LGBTQ person of color ever elected to the New York state legislature. To shatter that lavender ceiling he beat the odds, defeating the anointed successor to an open seat by keeping the needs of his constituents front and center throughout the campaign. At a time when grassroots engagement around racism, police brutality and other important issues is at a high, it is vital we elect people like Jabari who are respected by those leaders and can turn the ideas and enthusiasm into policy and legislation."
Two other Victory Fund endorsed LGBTQ Black candidates also won their primary races in New York earlier this month: Mondaire Jones and Ritchie Torres. Both are on-track to become the first two openly LGBTQ Black members of Congress.
