The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center will host the Pride Month virtual program "LGBTQ+ Upstanders with Eric Marcus" Tuesday, June 23, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The program will explore the world of Jewish LGBTQ+ historical figures with the founder and host of award-winning Making Gay History podcast, Eric Marcus. Illinois Holocaust Museum Associate Manager of Education Matthew Sackel will moderate the discussion.
Marcus will share these often-untold stories through excerpts from his audio archive of LGBTQ+-rights movement interviews conducted for his Stonewall Award-winning oral-history book, Making Gay History: The Half-Century Fight for Lesbian and Gay Equal Rights.
Highlights will include:
Frank Kameny, the U.S. Army astronomer who was fired for his sexual orientation & later played a role in de-classifying homosexuality as a mental illness;
Pauline "Popo" Phillips, the "Dear Abby" columnist who publicly and affirmatively wrote about homosexuality and the rights of gay people; and
Morty Manford, who co-founded PFLAG with his mother, Jeanne Manford.
