Indiana same-sex parents can list both names on children's birth certificates

On Jan. 17—after more than two and a half years—the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that married same-sex couples in Indiana can list both parents on their children's birth certificates, CNN.com reported.

In so deciding, the appeals court upheld a lower court ruling.

Under state law, opposite-sex spouses who used artificial insemination could still record a woman's husband as a child's father; however, same-sex couples could not do the same.

While the case waited, federal courts around the country ruled in favor of same-sex couples in similar birth-certificate cases. For instance, in 2017, an Arkansas law was upheld that required husbands to be listed on birth certificates applied to same-sex couples.
